Extell’s new residential condominiums at 50 West 66th Street is continuing to rise over Manhattan’s Upper West Side near Lincoln Center. Standing at an impressive height of 775 feet, it will become the tallest building in Manhattan north of 59th Street.
The building is being designed by Snøhetta, with SLCE serving as the executive architect, and is being developed by Extell and Tennor Holding B.V. Lendlease has been chosen as the general contractor for the project.
Situated between West 66th Street to the north, West 65th Street to the south, Central Park West to the east, and the intersection of Broadway and Columbus Avenue to the west, 50 West 66th Street is perfectly positioned in one of Manhattan’s most beloved neighborhoods.
The design of the building takes inspiration from the surrounding area, incorporating contemporary elements that pay homage to the neighborhood’s architectural character.
This will be the first residential building in the United States for the renowned architectural innovators, Snøhetta. With its prime location at the heart of the neighborhood’s cultural core, just steps away from Lincoln Center and Central Park, the building will seamlessly blend with its surroundings while offering stunning views of Central Park, the Hudson River, and the iconic New York City skyline.
Amenities at 50 West 66th Street will include an impressive 50,000 square feet of space, featuring both indoor and outdoor pools, a squash court, a full-sized basketball and pickleball court, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a sky lounge for entertaining, and a porte cochere entrance.
Construction on the building began in 2018 and will feature setbacks, private loggias, chamfered corners, and a communal terrace on the 16th floor. The facade will be made of limestone and burnished bronze below the 16th floor, transitioning to glass with burnished-bronze chamfers above that level.
The plans for 50 West 66th Street initially called for a 25-story tower, but they were later revised to include a 69-story tower reaching a height of 775 feet. This expansion faced opposition from some residents in the neighborhood, but the city ultimately approved the project in December 2018, despite the opposition.
50 West 66th Street is expected to be a transformative addition to the Upper West Side and the New York City skyline. With its 127 ultra-luxury homes ranging from two bedrooms to full floors, this tower represents an important milestone in Extell’s portfolio. Construction is expected to be completed in 2024.
